About

About Me.

My name is Steven Hughes and I am a design professional based in Austin, Texas.

Over the course of my career, I have worked for a wide array of clients including 3M Worldwide, Raytheon, Hilton Hotels, IKEA, alongside many others.

I currently work as an enterprise architect for Texas Health & Human Services, where I lead the Robotic Process Automation (RPA) efforts.

In late 2008, my mother passed away unexpectedly. Luckily I was with her during this time and one of the last things that she shared with me, was that she really wanted me to "finish my degree". My main reason for returning to school and completing my degree is to honor my mother, which I am extremely proud to be able to achieve.

For the next few years, I worked to do just that, except my degree was in something that was about to become obsolete, the web's flash animation. Due to the iphone's market dominance, their decision to not support flash impacted many flash designers such as myself. As a result, at the time I wasn't able to complete my interactive media degree.

With flash's presence shrinking in the market, it was time for me to learn a new toolkit for developing enterprise web. As a result, I starting learning Drupal, an open-source enterprise content management system.

Drupal powers a majority of the world's top websites, I first had the opportunity to work with drupal for IKEA, and quickly found myself a huge fan of both the (CMS) tool and the amazing designers and developers that make up the drupal community. Between 2015 and 2020, I was a volunteer for the drupal association where I  had the opportunity to dj at Drupalcon events in Austin, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Nashville and Baltimore. (check out some of the dj mixes here)

Work with Purpose

As my career progressed, I continued to build Drupal-based sites for various enterprise clients.  In 2016, having worked in the corporate private sector for the majority of my career, I had the opportunity to make an impact in the public sector.  I joined Texas HHS and led their web design efforts for the next five (5) years, leveraging open-source tools in many firsts for the agency.

After my projects plateaued and eventually shifted to their "maintenance" phase, I wanted to continue to challenge myself with new and emerging technologies, so I underwent training on Artifical Intelligence and Robotic Process Automation. Shortly afterwards, I began work as an Enterprise Architect and now lead the RPA team.

I'm grateful that my work has purpose, and that what I've learned, I'm able to share with others.
